How much will abstinence from alcohol affect a person's tolerance level? I'm a 27 year old male and have not had a drink for three weeks. I normally drink fairly regularly but thought I'd give it a rest for a bit. Next week I'm off to a stag weekend and although there will be a lot of booze there, I don't really want to get totally hammered. Would a month without the drink have any affect on my limit or am I worrying over nothing?
Do you know of any abstinence rings that represent no alcohol, drugs, or sex? I really want to get myself an abstinence ring. I've heard of this ring that represents no drugs, alcohol, or sex but when i looked it up i cant find it. Do you know what it is?

I have been abstinent for 14 months. Unfortunately I have been taking valium. Will the valium show up in the alcohol test. Stan
Why is it that schools teach abstinence from alcohol and drugs, yet they don't teach abstinence from sex? I wasn't sure where to put this, exactly. So, sorry if there was a better section!
The time that I read a book about total abstinence of alcohol for a good health, I already refused to......... I already refused to drink drinks with alcohol content. Thank God, the bread used during mass does not contain alcohol..I would just pray that someday the wine that priests drink will no longer contain alcohol so they have also a good health..Any reaction from this?
Should abstinence be the goal for treating people with alcohol problems? ? Should abstinence be the goal for treating people with alcohol problems? Some psychologists suggest that abstinence is the safest and most honest treatment goal for people who are dependent on alcohol. Others suggest that many people with alcohol problems can be successful in their efforts to control their drinking.
after twenty years of drinking alcohol, how long with abstinence does it take for liver enzimes to reduce? AA requires complete abstinence from alcohol. Is that really the best method of recovery? AA requires complete abstinence. I know because I have been going to AA meetings for about three years now. But I have drastically cut down on my drinking. I refuse to completely abstain from alcohol. I might drink only once per week and when I drink it is in a social setting. I feel good about how much I have cut back on alcohol consumption. I am proud of how far I have come. I used to drink every day just to get really drunk. But for months, I have not been doing that. Do you think it is wise for me to leave AA if I don't feel abstinence from alcohol is the only indicator of success? Although they don't verbally say it, they do look down on members who have a drink every now and then. According to AA, an alcoholic in the program who even drinks once in a while is a failure. They think one drink can kill you. Literally, they think one drink will lead an alcoholic to drink himself to death. I simply think that is absolutely ridiculous. Sorry, I really have to be honest here.
Alcohol abstinence syndromes? A concept confusion? Alcohol withdrawal syndrome, delirium tremens, wernicke's encephalopathy and korsakoff psychozis. All of them can be treated with Vitamin B1? It must be oral , intramuscular or intravascular?
Teen Drinking: What can be done to improve alcohol education? Alcohol abuse, especially underage, seems to be a huge issue in our society that struggles to be effectively addressed. Many high schools have policies to address the use of drugs and alcohol, but none of them seem to be effective. Kids are still drinking more then ever, regardless of consequences and punishments. I understand that abstinence of alcohol is not the answer for everyone, especially the majority, but there must be some way to teach responsible drinking, and that there is a difference between moderation and abuse. What are good solutions to help our youth? If caught underage, should a school penalize them from a sports team or other extracurricular activities? Should they do community service? Should they talk to a counselor? Could we create an education program that sends a different message about alcohol other then, “Alcohol is bad!” What are your feelings about alcohol in our society today? Thank you in advance for all opinions :)
What alcohol treatment strategies make sense in the UK? Is abstinence too exacting a standard in Britain? Drinking is so normalised, such a part of everyday culture, that not participating would cost you your social life... How do people struggling with alcohol issues cope in the UK? What are methods that work? I'd be grateful to hear about the effectiveness of traditional (AA) and alternative (eg harm reduction) approaches in the UK context. Theoretical discussion and personal experience very welcome... (secular approaches in particular).
which of the following statements about abstinence is true;? abstinence is the only way to avoid the consequence of some risk behavior or abstinence means avoiding illegal behavior or abstinence from alcohol is practiced by about 20% of teens in the U.S?
How does your personal morality differ from the morality of your religion? For example, does your religion prohibit sex before marriage but you are okay with it? Or does your religion demand abstinence from alcohol but you believe drinking is okay? Bonus question for those who are in total alignment with their religion, how does it make you feel to be able to effortlessly follow your deity's will?
Abstinence groups in college.....? im transferring to new mexico state university second semester this year, and was wondering, if at a major college like that, or even a college YOU are at, if it has a drug/alcohol abstinence group?? thanks!! =)
Can anyone tell me how Campral 333mg works and what it does? My partner has just today been prescribed these tablets but the information leaflet isn't particuarly clear. They're supposed to help with abstinence from alcohol. Does anyone have any experience with this medication?
AAAHH!! Can't drink alcohol anymore? After finally breaking my 10-year alcohol abstinence last year, I am now forcibly being kept from alcohol by a minor medical condition: alcohol + minor medical condition = huge discomcoft. HOW AM I GOING TO ESCAPE REALITY NOW!?!? I meant 'discomfort'.
Why were 25 homeless people found sleeping under the bridge Tuesday night? The overnight low was reported to have been minus 29.3 degrees C. It is an atrocity. Do you not agree. Why is it even legal? The city was found by a Temperance Colony (which advocated abstinence from alcohol), and remarking about this part of its history is like saying it was found by Puritans. The government has many socialized programs which are said to be helping the people. Why do they not seem to be kicking in?
Recovery from possible alcohol related liver problems.? Hi I recently had what the GP referred to as "slightly abnormal" results following a liver function test. The GP feels it may be related to alcohol even though I am a moderate drinker. There is a possibility that the "abnormal" results may be related to some other underlying problem and possibly the Aluperinol medication I take to prevent gout. I agreed to abstain from alcohol for two weeks and then take further bloods. My problem is I have a big birthday celebration planned this coming Friday and would like to have a few drinks that evening. My question is Is 11 days total alcohol abstinence sufficient for the liver to have began repairing itself and thus show up in the blood results (if the alcohol has been the problem of course)?
do most alcoholics have an underlying mental health issue? I've met quite a few alcoholics in my lifetime and alot of them talk about child abuse or having crap parents. I always suggest counseling & abstinence from alcohol would be the way to go instead of the bottle but they refuse to seek any medical help. Why do they want to make life so hard on themselves?
Your thoughts on Abstinence Contract ? Whilst viewing Weekend Sunrise(AUST) this morning they had 2 students on from a University in California. They were discussing the fact that the University has contracts that are signed by the students for Abstinence,& withhold from using alcohol & tobacco. What are your thoughts on this? I don't know the penalties if you were to break the contract. The young lady spoke of Christian values.
Did Rockefeller support prohibition to stop alcohol from being used as fuel? http://suzieqq.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/rockefeller-ford-and-the-secret-history-of-alcohol/ The above website claims Rockefeller supported prohibition to get rid of alcohol as competition for oil. Is this a conspiracy theory, or is there some truth to it? I'm looking for answers from people with a background in history. Some quick Google searching reveals that Rockefeller was a devout baptist and himself adhered to abstinence from alcohol and tobacco. I also found that Henry Ford apparently supported prohibition, which goes against this conspiracy theory. But I'd like to know what you guys think.
Can abstinence stress you out? Like abstinence from sex not from drugs or alcohol or anything like that, and also if you've done it before not if you've never done it.
Do you think going to Alcoholics Anonymous can help to get control of drinking? I know that I drink on a regular basis, and sometimes get drunk on the weekends like a fool like everyone else. I am an avid cook, and love to have wine tastings at my house and explore that part of the whole culinary experience (pairing wine with foods), but I think because I cook every night practically or have friends over, that I end up drinking like, 3 glasses of wine 4 nights a week and then have a blowout weekend just for fun. I told myself I would stop for a while, and I did, but then I'd cut into my celibacy against wine a few days early because i thought "oh who gives a shit"... etc etc. So I am thinking, maybe I am excusing myself from having a real drinking problem because I am hiding it behind the mask of it being a "culinary thing". I've been thinking about going to AA a lot but I am not sure if I want to pledge complete abstinence from alcohol, just control. Serious control. And perspective too.. Is this making sense? I would love serious thoughts only pls.
can abstinence be for multiple things? ok i know that you can be abstinent for sex but can you be abstinent for certain foods, alcohol/drugs? and is abstinence a lifestyle or a short period of time (like your team years)? should say teen not team, HAHA
Pork , Alcohol, Gambling In Islam? I am a non-muslim living in a muslim majority country but i have never asked this question to my muslim friends as it is very sensitive over here to ask this type of question. Pork, alcohol, gambling are all prohibited in Islam but why are muslims observe stricter abstinence from pork than consuming alcohol or gambling. Muslims often feel uneasy even at the mere mention of the word " pork " but many do not hesitate to consume alcohol or gamble Is the sin of consuming pork more than consuming alcohol / gambling ? I know in Islam pig is regarded as a dirty animal and hazardous to humans. In today's world, smoking and drugs are life threathening acts but many Muslims indulge in them but at the same time do not consume pork. If Muslims do not eat pork because they think its dirty and will bring harm to their health why can't they think the same way for smoking and drugs ? Please do not take this question negatively and answer with an open mind
Does abstinence really mean that you have to wait until marriage? I thought it just meant abstaining from something...like abstaining from sex until a certain period of time, or when people say "I've abstained from alcohol for 2 years." When I said "abstinent" in my other question, I meant I wanted to abstain from casual sex and wanted to only have sex in a meaningful relationship where love is involved..not wait until marriage.. Yeah, that's what I consider it..In my situation, I'm abstaining from no strings attached sex outside of a meanginful relationship.
How can I moderate my drinking? I don't want to give up alcohol completely, but I'd like to be able to limit myself to a few drinks a night. If I set myself a limit of four wines, I usually I can't resist having a fifth or sixth. Then I sleep badly and have a hangover the next day. I understand alcoholics anonymous is only for complete abstinence. Is there any organisation which tries to limit alcohol abuse without enforcing the suffering of abstinence?
Parents of teens!? Questions about purity, drugs, alcohol, and sex? To make this more straight forward, I shall number and label them. Haha 1. (sex) Do you know if your teen is having sex? Do you ever suspect it? Do you ever talk to them about sex, abstinence, STD'S, and birth control? 2. (drugs and alcohol) Do you ever talk to your teens about drugs and alcohol? Do you know if your teen is using either? Have you ever suspected it? 3. (purity) Do you wish of your child to stay a virgin until they get married? Do you (honestly) think that this is realistic? Thanks!
A polite and completely non critical question directed to all who prefer the arms of Bacchus to the grip of? everyday reality. Why do you choose alcohol rather than abstinence? If you find drinking a useful adjunct in your life, how so? If you have ever been involved in AA, counseling, or alcohol aversion therapy, what is your opinion of it? Please try to be fair in your comments. Your opinion and reaction are wholly your own and may not be the same as other peoples. Thank you. Pel, no argument here. Composing and fantasizing for me are effective opiates, much needed at this time of my life. No recovery time either.
Christians, does the Bible set precedents or is it meant to give us principles? For example, the Bible has many good things to say about wine, most famously in the miracle of the wedding at Cana. But it also offers us the principle that our bodies are holy temples of God, and that the strong must be patient with the weakness of the weak. Both of these principles would seem to counsel abstinence, even for those who can handle their liquor. So does the Bible support drinking alcohol because of specific precedent, or does it support abstinence based on general Biblical principles?
Alcohol-could you stop? I stopped alcohol five years ago and it has improved my life enormously. When people learn of my self imposed abstinence they often comment "I wish I could stop" , well why dont they? Is it because social drinkers are really addicted and dont know it? The UK has been identified as an alcoholic nation whose drinking is beond control-do you think this is really true? Could you stop?
Prove what the Bible has to say about drinking alcohol.? There are many opinions about alcohol, but what does the Bible really say? Abstinence? Moderation? Only for medical purposes? Keep in mind that while the word used in the Bible is wine, it doesn't always denote alcoholic wine. You must use the context and original language to determine the true meaning, and even then some instances are still inconclusive. I'm looking for well thought out answers and not just opinions or regurgitation. Please consider the context of the use of wine in your answers. Would Jesus have turned water into wine at Cana for the people the become "well drunk" as the text says? Come now, think, think. I'm looking for well thought out answers.
Is total abstinence from alchol okay? I used to sip a couple of beers everyday after dinner. Sometimes it used to be 4-5 bottles, and also at times 3-4 glasses of wines. But never ever whiskey or any other hard liquor. Since last December I totally abstained from all sorts of alchol, including beer. I stopped taking alcholf just because I found out my blood sugar was above the normal. The normal I guess is up to 126. Maybe 100-126 is even pre diabetes. My FBS was 176. I did check again twice within a week time and it became 165 and 144 respectively. My Cholesterol was also 213. I promised to myself never ever to touch again any alcohol and I am now on total abstinence from it. Some people say it is not good. They try to advise me that I need some level of alcohol in my body. Currently, my FBS is consistently below 100. My cholesterol is below 153. My blood pressure is consistently 120/85. Should I take some alcohol?
Alcohol use....alcohol dependence is rare (read details)? What do you think accounts for the strong racial/ethnic differences in the prevalence of abstinence and heavy drinking. What factors do you believe underlie the finding that while alcohol use is quite prevalent in some cultures (ex Europe), alcohol dependence is rare?
foolproof way to defeat a DOT drug screen? a close friend is trying to figure out a foolproof way to beat a DOT screen for pot. Any of you truckers out there have any advice for him? Please spare me the comments about abstinence. It's not alcohol, meth, coke, lsd.. it's just pot and he assured me he is not going to use anywhere near the time he would be driving.
Alcohol and headaches? Although i have always suffered with headaches/migraines it seems that now the slightest amount of alcohol will bring on a headache within a hour which will last for 24 hours.I have never been a big drinker but in the past alcohol was never a trigger for my headaches. Is it my age (39) that has brought this on. I am thoroughly p****d off as i enjoy a drink around xmas having worked hard all year . Does anyone suffer as i do and apart from alcohoil abstinence is there anything i can do to relieve the problem. Merry Christmas to everyone!
what are examples of abstinence? in health education? definition: choosing not to do something. such as.. drugs & alcohol, peer pressure.. those kinds of things. easy 10 points!
Is it a good decision to generally abstain from alcohol use? I'm not misinformed regarding alcohol. I know it does have some health benefits: it decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, and moderate drinkers tend to have longer lifespans than either heavy drinkers or abstainers. And it's unlikely serious consequences will arise from getting drunk every so often. But I also know the dark side of alcohol use. First, the extremes. Many, many people have had their lives wrecked, or at least troubled, by alcohol abuse - either directly or indirectly. I've met people like that, and I've heard horror stories about it. Alcohol impair judgment, and the consequences are occasionally dire. Now, I want to make this clear - it's not that I think it's the "pure, sinless" thing to do (I'm an agnostic), and I'd never judge somebody negatively for enjoying alcohol. And I doubt I'll never drink alcohol, in fact I have already - one sip of beer and I didn't like the taste of it. So basically, I think I'm going to generally abstain for the time being. I have three very good reasons: 1) I don't really like the taste; 2) I don't really want to experience a hangover; and 3) I just don't like the idea of my judgment being impaired. Is general abstinence a good idea? Should I try to incorporate alcohol into my diet? I'm not saying I'm going to be completely, 100% abstinent from alcohol, just in general. I'm not going to drink very much, if I ever do. I'm sure I will at some point or another.
Abstinence, wanky or funky? Well people I've put myself into a willing abstinence for the last 6 months. I quit sex, masturbating, meat, alcohol, drugs and most of my contacts with technology. During this time I've practiced yoga, I wrote 4 short plays, I've been painting, drawing, playing my guitar and composing (I wrote 8 great songs) and I've been doing extremely good at college. But also during this time I spent very little time with my few remaining friends and I pretty much look like a caveman right now:D Personally I'm really proud of myachievementt and I think spiritually I've grown for like 20 years. It's really been quite anexperiencee. So what do you think about this? Do you think you can actually do something like this, and how retarded/great you think it is?
Breaking my vow of abstinence to make my girlfriend happy? I love my girlfriend more than life itself. I really do. We've been together for almost two years now but both really liked each other in high school, and told her how I felt before I graduated (she was a sophomore then). Seven years have passed and we met up again when she came back home for new years a while ago. She went to college out in california and lived in france, spain, nyc, and tokyo, japan for the past years. She's still the same absolutely gorgeous, wonderful, intelligent, sweet, caring, witty, and just amazing girl she's always been, but other things have changed I guess. She used to be somewhat religious-oriented (I'm a devout christian, always have been) but she couldn't really care less now. She often uses alcohol to cope with problems even when I try to talk her out of it. I try to make her really happy (she's had a really bad home life all through jr high and high school) but the one thing she really wants is what I can't give her, sex. I took a vow of abstinence until marriage back when I was a kid and I can't break that promise, I don't think, no matter how hard it gets. The other night she was really frustrated and I asked her why and she said, "Why wouldn't I be frustrated? I haven't had sex in two years." Then she pretty much drank herself to sleep. Its not something she brings up much but you can tell how bad she wants it sometimes, especially the way she looks at me at times. She's had a lot of sexual partners, men and some women, and one time I told her when I was really mad that if she wants it so bad she should just go out and get laid, that she could walk into any bar or whatever and it'll only take her a few seconds to find a willing partner, but then she said, "That's not just it, you dont get it. I don't want just anyone, I want you. I want you taking me, in me, and I want to be feeling your weight on me, and its so hard going to bed everynight when you're right here and I can't do anything, and god if only you knew." (she'd been drinking, but still.) I'd do anything to make her happy but If I break my abstinence vow I could maybe really ruin my relationship with God? I don't know what to do anymore. I prayed for strength but it's still really bad. I just want her to be truly happy.
I want to start an abstinence club at my school..? My best friend is pregnant, we are freshmen, and she's definitely not the first. Everything she is going through, and everything I'm going though because she is pregnant has inspired me. I want to start an abstinence club at my high school. It'll be for everyone, not just virgins, but people who from this point on would like to abstain from sexual activity, drugs and alcohol. It wont be judgmental, it'll be a support group. Some days we with watch movies (teen pregnancy related, or abstinence related) others we will have discussions and lessons and activities. And I'm thinking about calling it "hold out"... I'll advertise it throughout the school with posters. A lot of people won't join even though they want to. I know. I don't care. But what are your opinions on my idea, and if you have any suggestions that would help. thank you:)
What's a good health project idea? In class we're doing the FACTS program and we all have to enter a contest by making a poster to promote abstinence of drugs, alcohol and sex. For example somebody made like a credit card type thing that had facts on it about teen pregnancies and the number on the back of the card to call was 1-800-imworthwaitingfor you know crap like that. So.. I was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas?
My mother was a drug addict and alcohol, Will i be the same? My mother was a drug addict and an alcoholic when she was pregnant with me.She was high on heroine and very drunk when she gave birth to me. I was diagnosed wit Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Which means i had to be weened off drugs and alcohol when i was born. I was wondering if i have a greater chance of becoming addicted to either, As i am 18 and have started drinking and i am really worried because every time i drink now, even three drinks of vodka, i am literally on the floor and cannot move. This is really scary. I don't and never will take drugs, but i do smoke?. Will i be able 2 become addicted to stuff more than someone who didnt have NAS? please help me....
Bible and alcohol/pork? Why do Christians not think of drinking alcohol as committing a sin, when it is mentioned in the Bible? Same with eating pork in the Old Testament (Leviticus)? For example, in the Book of Proverbs, alcoholic wine is referred to as a mocker and a deceiver that leads to violence (20:1-2), poverty (23:21), sorrow (23:29-30,) immorality(23:33,) insecurity (23:34,) insensibility (23:35,) and is even compared to a poisonous snake! (23:32) On the other hand, abstinence from wine and other intoxicants is presented as a great virtue. God honored Daniel for refusing the King's wine (Daniel 1:5, 8, 16; 10:3.) John the Baptist's greatness in the eyes of God was directly linked to the fact that he drank no wine or strong drink (Luke 1:15.) Even as he was dying, Jesus (pbuh) refused the wine that was offered him to deaden his pain (Mark 15: 23.) I am just curious since it seems that Christians and Muslims have a lot more in common than they realize. What does "under Grace" mean? And when you say that you are under no law, are you being serious? There are no rules for you as Christians? And I don't see the distinction between drinking a "little" and getting drunk. I love God and want to stay as far a way from anything that could lead to me committing a sin as possible, to me, that means avoiding it altogher. Don't you agree?
If I was addicted to pills, what about alcohol? I sought treatment for an addiction to benzodiazapam and ambien and went into an AA-based treatement/recovery program. I know about what AA says about cross addiction, which is why I haven't touched alcohol for the past five months. The thing is though is that I was always a controlled drinker - I'm in sales and had to entertain clients frequently and would always water down after a drink to maintain composure (meals were the only time I would drink). There are other programs that do not subscribe to total abstinence from all things mind-altering and personally, I'd like to "unload" all of the black/white thinking I've picked up from AA because it doesn't really follow my personal views of living - especially my belief that if you don't give something attention, it doesn't manifest into an internal conflict. I cannot stand the hyperfocus on alcohol and feel that all of this is too engrained in my psyche now. Has anyone ever kicked a pill problem and been able to drink in moderation? P.S. I also feel as if I am a spiritually-evolved person. I didn't have a problem with that part of the AA program - I do feel solid in my spirituality and also felt like I was able to let go of a lot of things during the intensive in-patient therapy part. If getting healing all of the old childhood scars and growing in spiritual awareness was the problem, it seems I'm much further along than many of my peers in that regard.
What is the premises and conclusion? The debate on whether alcoholism is a disease or a personal conduct problem has continued for over 200 years. In the United States, Benjamin Rush, M.D., has been credited with first identifying alcoholism as a "disease" in 1784. He asserted that alcohol was the causal agent, loss of control over drinking behavior being the characteristic symptom, and total abstinence the only effective cure. His belief in this concept was so strong that he spearheaded a public education campaign in the United States to reduce public drunkenness.
Does anyone here believe that there should be a sin tax on condoms like there is on alcohol? I was prompted to ask this question, because a conservative poster here suggested that there should be a sin tax on condoms like there is on alcohol. To say the very least, I think this is a ridiculous idea. I imagine that this person probably believes that the availability of condoms encourages promiscuity, but since so many conservatives here like to go on ad nauseam about the value of personal responsibility, I can't help but think that promoting this idea contradicts that, since using condoms to prevent diseases and unwanted pregnancies is very responsible behavior. If people aren't going to practice abstinence, then practicing safe sex is certainly the next best thing.
Will beer kill a fitness routine? Its getting that time of year where my husband and I and our friends are always out on the lake or at a barbeque, drinking beer and/or cocktails of choice. Whats the best way, other than abstinence, to keep the alcohol consumption from killing my routine?
Does the Bible counsel abstinence from alcohol and wine? Drink no wine, nor strong drink, that ye die not! Leviticus 10;9 Judges 13:2-24
Can you revert back to being abstinent? I have been sexually active since age 13 and i am now 17 and sex has been a big factor in my life but it has ruined a lot of my relationships and parts of my self esteem. I think my best bet would be abstinence, but i don't want to be a hypocrite. i used to be completely straight edge (no drugs, no sex, no alcohol) but that changed when my life spiraled downward...so i was wondering if there are certain steps to to become abstinent after already having sexual intercourse?
What do other religions make of the 3 Life Lights of Pikanism? 1) Love and protect all of life 'All of life' refers to anything that is alive. Also, you may recognize these as a new take on the first five Buddhist precepts, rephrasing them to remove abstinence (negative action, 'do not') in favour of liberal positive action ('do', where you can). * Avoid all harm It is not to be taken as extreme, though. If any life is taken as a result of accident or absolute necessity, it is considered as being exempt from this. Ultimately, it is the will that dictates. Loving and protecting all is virtually impossible, so all that is required is an honest attempt. * Claim only what you hold possession of Ownership is not inferred here. If it were, then this would mean denying yourself everything, as the way of the rabbit is that even the burrow does not belong to the rabbit. Everything is borrowed from Nature, which in turn (Deistically) is borrowed from a deity. Instead, this refers to what is granted to you, either by your own effort, as a gift from another, or in fair trade. * Exercise care in sexual activity This refers to respect and not harming. If one were to indulge in sexual activity with somebody other than the person they are in a relationship with, it would cause immense emotional harm to that person. Also, one night stands may well be mutually convenient, but the risk of harm is still present. Homosexuality is accepted, as it is seen as a Natural difference, to be respected. * Speak only positively and truthfully This does not mean to remain silent if you have a negative view that may be helpful. The helpfulness is positive, even if the words themselves are not. * Avoid losing full control This points at alcohol and narcotics. Any substance which may affect the function of the mind. How do we keep to all the others, if we cannot think straight for not keeping this one? It is not an all-out ban, however. An occasional lapse, provided it is kept to the minimum, is acceptable as long as it does not cause any loss of control. 2) Accept and embrace opposition as equal, and equally right Remember that all opinions are just that. Opinions. Even yours. The Pikan viewpoint is the epitome of this. By gathering a whole host of opinions, and blending them into one, it is more likely that the combination will result in truth. However, this itself is just as valid as any other opinion. For a Pikan, it is also recognition that our religious position is 'borrowed' from others. To disrespect the source is not positive nor truthful. 3) Respect Nature Respect for Nature can be on any of a multitude of levels, from actively combating the threat to Nature that the human race presents, to simply reflecting on Her power, on at least a daily basis. Just a little more background, to remove confusion. Pikans may or may not believe in a God or Gods. Where I mentioned deity earlier on, I was referring to a deistic school of thought only. The religion itself can be followed in any way, be it atheistic, deistic, ...whatever. I myself am an atheist. To further highlight this diversity, both Buddha and Jesus are revered in equal proportions in Pikanism. A theistic view, supported and complimented by an atheistic one. Ultimately, the Pikan path prefers unity over division. Liz: The 'possessions' part is basically 'do not steal', but it goes deeper. For example, if you find something, you have not stolen it. Nevertheless, it isn't something you made, paid for, earned or was given. Therefore, there is reason to not claim ownership of it. Ignore the pennies, hand in the valuables, and look after (as opposed to adopt) stray pets. Essentially, if it's not yours by gift, trade, earnings or craftsmanship, then you 'should' not have it as your own.
I'm trying hard to abstain from drinking alcohol. Tips? I've been drinking somewhat excessively for a few weeks now. Last night was my first night without a drink though. Um, what can I do to keep up my abstinence? I would really like to only drink socially for example, such as on weekends.

Have tried drinking plain water, taking sugar, plain rice to no effect. Please help. The only thing that has worked for me yet is me putting my fingers deep in my mouth upto my epiglottis and coughing out some of the sputum in my esophagus.

THANKYOU ALL! JUST ANSWER THE FXCKING QUESTION BXTCHES!!
Advice on alcohol withdrawal? I am presently trying to attemp a home detox. I try to reduce my daily intake, but am finding it very difficult with the DTs in the mornings. No matter how hard I try to only allow myself a few sips, rather than the sort of amounts that my body is screaming at me to take to make the misery go away, I can't seem to get past more than four hours of the sorts of pains and indignities I have to go through. I understand to keep well clear of medications, especially anything paracetamol based. I have Valium(Diazepam) but know not to take any without at least 8 hours of abstinence first. I have tried meditative, yogic and breathing techniques during the worst hours of the day. I have a very small amount of cannabis, but again, do not wish mix substances. Has anybody out there with personal experience of being in the same situation any practical tips on how they have got through it? Thank you. Kevin. , <bofhof55@yahoo.co.uk> Thank you all-with one exception- for the support. I am UK based, attend AA on occasions, and am aware that I am taking risks trying to treat myself. However, I have had very bad experiences with the British mental & healthcare system in the past, which I am very reluctant to get involved with again-trying to be honest, for "reluctant", read "terrified". I do not have the luxury of the time, or the mental energy required to fight through the beaurocracy, or the money to seek private treatment. AAs help is long term, I believe I know more about my condition than my GP, but need to deal with this now, before it destroys my life. Simple, practical advice on getting through to the other side is what I am asking about. Longer term issues I will have to deal with later, when I am able to do so. However, appreciate the number of replies I have had in a very short time, and will do my best to remember that there are nice people out there!
mother problems, she thinks im weird? okay, im 15 years old and my mom thinks im very weird. she dosent like the way i dress (usually t-shirt and jean pants, soo......wtc?) and she dosent like my hair either but i dont understand because its around medium length, pretty straigh, parted 2 one side, u know, the usual. i have alot of friends and im pretty sociable but i dnt have many best friends, but she still expects me to be overflowed with social stuff on the weekends and things. she also HATES my music. she is very christian (and so am i btw) and i enjoy all types of rock/metal. sh told me i should listen to more christian based music soo i found a LOT of christian metal band to listen to but she dosent appreciate my efforts because they are christian METAL bands and she says metal is "not normal". she also tells me its not normal to not enjoy sports. i used to play baseball when i was 7-11 years old but i just dont like sprts anymore but she still calls me weird for it. she also dosent respect my intrests like lego sculpting, steampunk, spending time on computer and video games and she thinks anything outside of sports, "hollister based clothes" and pop/r&b/hip hop music to be WEIRD and i am not into those things...im usually a pretty good kid and i make good grades and am straight edge (no drugs/alcohol, abstinence) but i am just very confused about all this, any thoughts?
Commercial ideas? (Creativity please! Thank you!)? I'm getting into the music producer business and I've been able to get connections with a local television channel to write jingles for television commercials. Now, what I need from all of you; Tell me little stories and ideas for commercials, be it for any kind of products (Sports equipment, toiletries, restaurants, you name it!), anti-drug/alcohol/abstinence, ANYTHING! I want to start visualizing these things and creating nice little jingles for them!(And if you get chosen as the best answer... You should have bragging rights forever and be hired to be an professional advertiser!) Thanks guys and gals! Okay, apparently there's some confusion because I didn't clarify. These ideas are just little stories that I want to write songs to since I make the songs for commercials... I'm not actually going to use them, I'm just trying to imagine them and write a nice catchy song that matches the story/ there's no money involved. I just want to work on my creativity for composing so when I do actually get put up to a project I have a better inventory of ideas to contrast.
wish of a failing student plz help!??!? my final for eng. sucks ....i need to write a story using the words aberration animosity abstinence abstract acclaim acquiesce admonish advocate affinity aesthetic aggrandizement alleviate alienate aloof altruistic ambiguous ambivalence ameliorate analoguous animosity anonymity my essay sucks help me make it better and add some spice to it please!! or can you gimme an idea for a new one my average is like a D for disaster!!!! please and thanks you =) Karen was always aloof from her family member when it came time for everyone to be together for the holidays because of the animosity she was faced with for getting divorced with her husband Joe. Her family wasn’t an advocate of having Karen raise two kids on her own and as a result tried to force her back with Joe. They wished to see her happy as she once was when she and Joe still had an affinity for one another. However, Karen did not acquiesce to what she considered such foolishness because she felt Joe’s constant drinking wasn’t just an aberration but an onset for a filthy habit that would have a negative effect not only on his health but on their children as well, who looked up to their father. Karen admonished Joe of the impact his behavior, after too many drinks, had on their relationship and tried to have him make a pledge to remain abstinence towards alcohol. Unfortunately, Joe alienated his wife by being inconsiderate and continuing to drink. He made no effort to alleviate his wife’s pain and worry and in the end failed to ameliorate their relationship all in all.
Sandstorm is your position firm.......? on abstinence from alcohol?
What is the best way to learn how to be a bartender? The notion has only recently come to my mind to be a bartender. I can’t imagine why that is. I do not drink alcohol at all; never have, and I don’t intend to start. Based upon that, how can I go about learning to become a bartender? Should I find a Bartending School? Which ones are good and low cost? Should I find a restaurant that would be willing to train me? I’d have to start from the very basics as I couldn’t tell you the difference between a cocktail and a martini. I’m also willing to accept the possibility that this is a totally stupid idea on my part (taking abstinence from alcohol into consideration) and to try to find something else to do with myself.

Who burnt the Library of Alexandria? ...Two thousand years ago a great teacher of humanity appeared in the world. He was a philosopher, a social leader, a moral teacher, a religious reformer and a healer. From one end of the Roman Empire to the other, wherever he went, divine honors were bestowed on him -- by all, from slave to emperor. He was undoubtedly the greatest man of his age; and his date of birth (4 B.C.) and period of activity coincided exactly with those of the Christian messiah, except that APOLLONIUS'S life of incessant labor in behalf of humanity extended for over a century, during which time he preserved his health of body and brilliance of mind unimpaired by the passage of time. He was a supreme exemplar of human perfection -- physically, mentally and spiritually. Oven seventeen temples were erected in honor of him in various parts of the Roman Empire. His name was APOLLONIUS OF TYANA. No more courageous humanitarian and social revolutionist has ever come to this world to help the human race and redeem it from suffering. Alone and single-handed, he defied the bloodiest tyrants who ever sat on the Roman throne -- Nero and his more terrible successor, Domitian. Apollonius fear-lessly traveled from one end of the Roman Empire to the other, inciting revolutions against the despots, and establish-ing communistic communities among his followers, who bore the name of Essenes, early Christians. And not content with such activities in the Roman provinces, he bravely entered Rome itself, after all philosophers had been expelled from the city under penalty of death by the cruel Domitian; there he openly denounced the tyrant, for which he was arrested and thrown into a dungeon, awaiting certain death which however, due to his brilliant speech in self-defense and his extraordinary powers of mind, he averted, securing his liberty. Two centuries after Domitian, the arch-murderer and degenerate Constantine sat on the throne of Rome. While former Roman emperors hated Apollonius because of his revolutionary and "communistic" activities, Constantine especially hated his Pythagorean teachings -- his strict advocacy of vegetarianism, abstinence from alcohol and continence. Con-stantine enjoyed the red meats, the flowing wines and the beautiful women of his midnight revels too much to be willing to accept the religion of which Apollonius was the recognized head -- a religion which he imported from India, based on the doctrines of Chrishna and Buddha and bearing the name of Essenian Christosism. It was for this reason that Constantine directed his armies to exterminate the descendants of Apollonius's Essenian followers, who were known as Manichaeans. Finding that the religion of Rome was in a state of advanced decay and was daily losing hold on the masses, while the cult of Apollonius and the communistic communities of his Manichaean followers, in spite of the severest persecution, kept spreading, threatening the vested interests of Rome, Constantine's henchmen - the pagan priests of the Roman religion - decided to hold a convention at Nicea in the year 325 A.D., for the purpose of establishing a new religion. They decided to take over the popularity enjoyed by the followers of Apollonius, appropriate its essential doctrines (altering them so that they might be acceptable to Constantine), and to replace the philosopher Apollonius, whose abstemious Pythagoreanism was too well known and too much hated by their emperor, by a super-natural messiah whose teachings would be less radical and more acceptable to him. So in place of Apollonius of Tyana, they put their newly created savior, whom they named "Jesus Christ," who, THEN AND THERE, was first conceived and created in the minds of Roman priests who were later known as the Nicean Church Fathers. ...So in place of Apollonius of Tyana, they put their newly created savior, whom they named "Jesus Christ," who, THEN AND THERE, was first conceived and created in the minds of Roman priests who were later known as the Nicean Church Fathers. As soon as Jesus was put in the place of Apollonius, the task of the Roman churchmen was TO DESTROY ALL RECORDS concerning Apollonius and his Essenian Early Christian followers during the first three centuries, so that the world might forever be kept in darkness concerning this COLLOSAL DECEPTION, and be made to believe that Jesus and the Christian religion, which they originated at the BEGINNING OF THE FOURTH CENTURY A.D., antedated their creation by three centuries. It was for this reason that the Alexandrian and other ancient libraries were burnt, so that all books written during and pertaining to the FIRST THREE CENTURIES OF OUR ERA MIGHT BE DESTROYED. And so well did the churchmen succeed in obliterating such records, that, for nearly two thousand years, the world has been kept in darkness concerning the fact that Apollonius of Tyana was the recognized world teacher of the first century, and that during the first three centuries, before he was created at the Co

I stopped drinking, how long until it affects my blood pressure? I've been an alcoholic for the last 7 years, all day every day drink until I pass out and if I wake up I start over. When my blood pressure hit 152/100 the other day I decided it was time to shape up and stop drinking. I am 25. And doctors have been warning me forever. It's been 3-4 days and I haven't seen any decrease other than what could be considered normal fluctuation. . . My diet can't be any worse than most people on the planet and I'm in the military so I'm more active than the average joe. Am I wasting my time trying to lower my BP with abstinence from alcohol?
I wanna turn asexual? Laugh if you want but I'm tired of women and sex. I can't handle the pressures in any relationship coz I like to be free bird. I've just thought over it carefully -I need some kinda abstinence from women, sexual thoughts just like you have abstinence programs from alcohol, drugs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexuality I joined an asexuality network few months back but left it coz it was again full of women like 9 out of 10 members were young women and damn...
Why do some people blame parental upbringing on morality? I could understand this if we're talking about children even teenagers, but adults cannot blame their parents for their morals. Is it just me or does there come a time in everyone's life where we question the teachings of our parents and make up our own minds? My parents are very religious people with many conservative morals. I attended church, youth groups and private school all with the intention that I learn these ideas, but my values of what is right and wrong very much conflict with the ideas taught to me. For example while I attended many abstinence classes meant to discourage not only premarital sex, but all use of alcohol and drugs and my parents discouraged these things as an adult I know that premarital sex is not wrong nor is responsible use of drugs and alcohol. Some people would say, 'it's all in the way you were raised.' But how can that be true? Don't people think for themselves and use their own powers of intelligence?
Study finds Protestant Christians becoming obese. (No Joke!) Now they know, what is the Christian thing to do? Recent studies have discovered a real health crisis: Some conservative Christian denominations are a breeding ground for American obesity. See this link: http://www.suntimes.com/output/falsani/cst-nws-fals25a.html Is there a Christian response? Should doctors assume that being a protestant constitutes a risk factor for life-threatening obesity? What role does Christian abstinence from sex, alcohol, tobacco, and dancing play? Christians have built hospitals: should they also build weight-loss centers? I apparently did not make this clear: The study found that Protestant Christians were becoming fatter than Catholics, Jews or Muslims.
Why is when when teens get STd's they blame it on the school? I've always found it strange and dumb when teenagers get pregnant or disease, abstinence only education or the sex ed program is blamed. Why not the parent or how about this...THE TEEN. If a teen is injured in a car crash....the school must have a bad alcohol problem. What if it were like this: The teen overdosed....the school has a bad drug program The teen falls down the stirs....bad physics prgram
guys and girls...is this a good thing? i really like this guy. i have no idea if he likes me sometimes it seems like he does, but others not... but anyway... we have some simalarities, but more differences like, we both believe in abstinence, no drugs, no alcohol, close with your family, be nice to everyone. but are differences are he's more shy, and i'm more outgoing he's a skater, and i would say i come from the more preppy crowd... he hardly cracks jokes, but i always do he's serious, and i'm sracastic he doesn't watch the same shows i do i do'nt know if it's a good thing i mean idk if he'll ever like me as much as i like him and idk... anyyy help?
My whole family is worried about our 19 year old niece. I am from a close knit family, and we are all worried about one of my youngest niece. She does well in school, but seems to make several poor choices outside of school. After not seeing her in a while, we discovered that she has a tattoo on her back, and tattoos have never been something our family has supported. After spending more time with her, we are now suspicious that she has been drinking, although she is still underage. (she sometimes seems drunk, and smells like alcohol.) The thing that concerns us most is that she has been having sex with someone who is 4 years older than her in age. We find this extremely inappropriate. She is 19, and has no business having sex with a 23 year old. We grew suspicious from texts that she made on her phone. Plus, she was being really touchy-feely with this guy in public. When we asked her about it, at first she denied this, but after a bit, she admitted that she was in fact having sex with this man, but they were not officially dating, and she stated that nothing about her life is our f***ing business, and she feels we are being nosy, but it is just because we care about her! It comes as a surprise because just a few years ago, she was such a sweet girl, who only said nice things, and she was part of an abstinence club, and an anti-drugs and drinking program, and now her whole life seems centered around sex, and booze. During middle and high school, she did have a couple problems with depression, but she was always a pretty happy person, and we just want to know what happened, and how we can keep her from going down the wrong path like she is. We try to come up with things she can come do with the family, but she'd much rather go have sex with this man who is not her boyfriend but she describes him as her "best friend." She claims he loves her more than anyone in the family does, and that we don't understand. What could have ever gone wrong with her? How can we get through to her, and who's in the right here?

Can people accept that even though? Islam is not their religion that it can serve as an enhancening aspect in some people's life? It stops me from doing otherwise horrible stuff and I feel more peaceful being a Muslim. Fasting teaches you restraint and empathy. Prayer teaches subservience and humility. Abstinence teaches self control (including no drinking alcohol; which kills a person every 31 minutes). I mean, you may not find it suitable; but as an educated person having read the WHOLE Qu'ran and analyzed it, I am totally content with it. Peace & God bless.
Do you prefer doing things you enjoy to living longer? CAREFUL; THIS ONE'S TRICKY!? My favorite comedian says: Sometimes FUN costs ya! I'm wondering how many would choose to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or engage in other harmful behavior simply because the thing, whatever it is, is enjoyable to you and you prefer to LIVE until you die rather than trying to prolong your life through abstinence of the harmful behaviors?
Homework question. please help.? Why should abstinence be the primary goal for treatment with people in alcohol anonymous?
Is it possible to fix such a marriage? I've been married for 17 years and the past 10 yrs. have been more than less very unhappy. We don't do anything together anymore, we barely talk to eachother and there is almost nothing in common anymore. Our marriage started shaking when I got pregnant and he didn't want a child. We seperated then for a year and he came back and asked (crying) for a 'second chance'. He did change on his part, being nice and gentle with our child. I thought I was going to be able to forgive him for a lot of things he did and did not do during my pregnancy and 1st year of the child. In any case, I discovered that I had grown really apart from him as well. I could not trust him anymore and didn't want him to approach me sexually. This has been going on for too long. And ideally I'd be starting the process of getting divorced, but I'm afraid of this step due to the following reason . During the past 10 yrs. I was abusing a lot of alcohol, and am in an intensive treatment (complete abstinence, AA and all). Have some mental and physical health issues where I don't know if and how long I can be employed. So, I'm kind of scared of getting divorced and not being able to work, loosing custudy of my child etc. But a lot of changes are taking place, my communication skills and temper control are a whole lot better. So, I asked him to come join in with the counselor, and he refuses (as he does anything in regard to me, we organize a party in the house, and he goes out for a motorcycle ride, saying that he doesn't want to meet my friends), like I said, I'd like him to come see the counselor, and he refuses. When I try to talk to him about our really cold marriage, he says "I'm happy". I just can't imagine how such a marriage can be happy it's eating me up. I'm on medication just so that I can still function at this point, but I don't want to live the rest of my life like this. I don't see how such a marriage could be repaired and even if it is possible at all then one doesn't want to participate with outside help. I'm asking for some serious advise (please no insulting, hurtfull comments - I really don't need that!). It's been a bit long, sorry for that, but it's just that I'm looking for that one sparkling moment there I can make (hopefully) a good decision (and not a "stupid" one)...

A lot of people have made some reference to marijuana or other drugs in response to learning that I am a Buddhist, and I simply do not understand this. I have abstained from alcohol and drugs my entire life because it is a part of my religion. Yet most people that I meet immediately associate the very religion that inspires my abstinence with the self-destructive drugs that it prohibits. Why on earth do so many people associate a religion that advocates clearness of mind with a substance that clouds one's mind? The Pañca-Sīla (Five Precepts), a moral code that all Buddhist laymen adhere to, tells us "to refrain from intoxicants, which lead to heedlessness" So why the association? Primordius: Seeking to comprehend something that I do not understand does not make me a bad Buddhist, it makes me a better one...

Buddhism anyone? What are your thoughts on the simple Buddhist teachings? The first five precepts: 1. To refrain from taking life. (i.e. non-violence towards sentient life forms) 2. To refrain from taking that which is not given (i.e. not committing theft). 3. To refrain from sensual misconduct (abstinence from immoral sexual behavior). 4. To refrain from lying. (i.e. speaking truth always) 5. To refrain from intoxicants which lead to loss of mindfulness (refrain from using drugs or alcohol.) Do any of the other religions teach this? Personally, I think these 5 precepts are what we should all try to live by. The other teachings of Buddhism take humbleness farther.
Overprotective Dad? Feedback please.? Ok so here is the deal. I'm a 17 yr old girl about to turn 18 in 2 weeks. My boyfriend is 21 and we've been dating officially for three. My bf and I are very much into eachother and we call eachother sweetie and hun. We see each other all the time and hang out. We don't do anything "bad" and he's always very respectful of my beliefs. My parents know that I believe in abstinence and that I'm not quote on quote easy, but ever since i began dating my boyfriend my father has become very untrusting and suspicious of everything. He is convinced that every time i go out with friends that it's really to secretly meet my bf and that when I'm with my bf we're doing bad things. Just a few minutes ago I got off the phone with my bf and caught my dad spying on me in the hallway. HE'D BEEN LISTENING TO OUR CONVERSATION!! I have never given them any reason to mistrust me. I am always honest and I have never done drugs snuck out or drank alcohol. Can anyone enlighten me here?

Am I going to hell? (opinions of serious Christians required)? I stopped going to church shortly after my confirmation at the age of 11. I still celebrate Christmas, but not for the religious aspects. I love giving presents and being with my family. I commit the occasional sin (never anything extreme like murder) and only feel bad if its something against another human being, like lying. Or cheating. I don't confess any of these, I just mull them over and decide to forgive myself in the end. Life's too short for what guilt does to our blood pressure. But all in all, I'm a caring sister and a devoted friend. I hope for a lot of things, but I don't pray, because I consider myself an agnostic and don't think it's reasonable to accept God so fully, like we accept gravity. I just got a tattoo, and I'd sooner eat dirt than declare abstinence until marriage. I've smoked pot and drank alcohol, but I've got no addictions (cookie dough aside) and have never dabbled in hard drugs. So there are the facts. And I'm asking you... am I going to hell? P.S. I was going to save this until later, but I want as many people to read it as possible. I have hardcore Christians who are my good friends, people I love. But I've met Christians who are intolerant and judgmental and overbearing. And I wanted to give some of them a glimpse into who I was so they could see what kind of person was being condemned to eternal damnation by the rules they follow. And hopefully, they'd recognize that she's not a serial killer, or a child molester, or a twisted sociopath who hurts the lives of everyone she knows. She's a person living life, trying to experience it, and doing the best she can. If that's the kind of person who goes to hell, we're living in one twisted universe. p.s. goinupru: do you really think they would've confirmed me if I hadn't known the important Jesus stories? pps goinupru here's the only "real thing" that logic has done for me- the universe is mind-blowingly huge and each human's life is a tiny blip on a spectrum that stretches on for miles and miles. for any one of us to assume there is or is not a God is just too presumptuous; it's more realistic to recognize our fundamental ignorance as humans and be as theistic/skeptic as we please. which is why I've embraced agnosticism. I appreciate the effort and gesture on your part to help, but I think you missed my original point- I wanted to enquire as to the fairness of a universe where someone like me goes to Hell, simply by not embracing God as truth and Jesus as the savior. So everyone before organized religion is in hell? Everyone around the world who isn't Christian goes to hell? Being a good person and living a good life should be enough if God is as caring to "His children" as everyone claims he is.
