How would a bacterial infection have been treated in the late 1800s?

I am writing a fan-fictional story, set in Paris, France in the 1890s. My main female characters scrapes her arm on a cave floor (rocks, rough but not jagged). She bleeds but gets it stitched up with a sterile needle. However, she contracts an infection. What would a nineteenth century doctor use to treat the wound?

  1. Aspirin was not invented until sometime in the 1900...So I would guess they would clean the infection throughly with whatever they had...probably alcohol...and HOPE for the best...and of course wrap the wound.
  2. Syphilis was treated with arsenic, but no other antibacterial treatments existed yet.
